Somatic complaints, emotional awareness and maladjustment in schoolchildren

2015

Introduction: Somatic complaints are common in childhood. Research has shown their relationship with emotional awareness and maladjustment. The study had three objectives: 1) to analyse the prevalence of somatic complaints; 2) to explore the relationships between the variables evaluated: somatic complaints, differentiating emotions, verbal sharing of emotions, not hiding emotions, body awareness, attending to others’ emotions, analysis of emotions, and personal, social, family, and school maladjustments; and 3) to identify predictors of somatic complaints. Patients and methods: The study included a total of 1134 randomly selected schoolchildren of both sexes between 10 and 12 years old (M =…

Effectiveness of a Physical Education Program on the Motor and Pre-literacy Skills of Preschoolers From the Training-To-Health Project: A Focus on We…

2020

Many studies reported a positive relationship between motor skills, cognitive functions, and school performance in school-age children; however, little is known in preschool children. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a physical education program (PEP) on locomotor, object control skills, and pre-literacy cognitive functions in a wide population of preschoolers and verify whether weight status could influence these abilities. In the context of the Training-to-Health Project, a sample of 1,029 preschoolers was recruited in kindergartens from the urban area of Palermo (Italy). Their gross motor and pre-literacy skills were tested before (PRE) and after (POST…

Change in body image among depressed adult outpatients after a dance movement therapy group treatment

2018

Abstract This study reports on the body image of depressed psychiatric outpatients, and the impact thereon of a dance movement therapy (DMT) group. Body image is perceived as a tri-partite construct consisting of image-properties, body-self, and body memory. Depressed patients in an outpatient mental health service participated in a DMT group treatment consisting of twelve 90-min long sessions in groups of 4–7 patients. Patients (N = 18) responded to a structured Body Image Assessment (BIA) before and after the treatment. Initially, the depressed patients’ body image was characterized by fragmentation, distortions, and shallowness of body awareness. The DMT group treatment aimed to offer th…

The phenomenon of movement quality: a phenomenographic study of physiotherapy students’ movement experiences

2016

Background: This study aimed to explore how students in a physiotherapy bachelor program acquire awareness of their own movement quality and form conceptions of movement quality. Methods: The study was designed as an elective course, implementing Basic Body Awareness Therapy principles. The participants were six PT students. Two data sets – students’ diaries and reflective group interviews – were collected, one a week before the course ended, and one on its completion. Phenomenographic research methodology was used to transcribe and analyze the data. Results: Three descriptive categories emerged reflecting the PT students’ conceptions of movement quality phenomenon as a widening process: I:…

How can movement quality be promoted in clinical practice? A phenomenological study of physical therapist experts.

2010

Background In recent years, physical therapists have paid greater attention to body awareness. Clinicians have witnessed the benefits of supporting their patients' learning of movement awareness through the promotion of their movement quality. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate how physical therapist experts promote movement quality in their usual clinical settings. Design A phenomenological research design that included a sampling strategy was devised. Using specific criteria, 6 lead physical therapists nominated a group of physical therapist experts from the fields of neurology, primary health care, and mental health. Fifteen informants, 5 from each field, agreed to parti…

Enseñar Mindfulness: Contextos de Instrucción y Pedagogía

2016

Unwanted effects: Is there a negative side of meditation? A multicentre survey

2017

Objectives Despite the long-term use and evidence-based efficacy of meditation and mindfulness-based interventions, there is still a lack of data about the possible unwanted effects (UEs) of these practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of UEs among meditation practitioners, considering moderating factors such as the type, frequency, and lifetime duration of the meditation practices. Methods An online survey was developed and disseminated through several websites, such as Spanish-, English- and Portuguese-language scientific research portals related to mindfulness and meditation. After excluding people who did not answer the survey correctly or completely and those w…

Use of hierarchical Bayesian framework in MTS studies to model different causes and novel possible forms of acquired MTS

2015

Abstract: An integrative account of MTS could be cast in terms of hierarchical Bayesian inference. It may help to highlight a central role of sensory (tactile) precision could play in MTS. We suggest that anosognosic patients, with anesthetic hemisoma, can also be interpreted as a form of acquired MTS, providing additional data for the model.

Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers

2016

Ismael Pedraza, 2016. Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers. Master s thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences. University of Jyväskylä. Pp. 53. Interoception is the conscious awareness of internal sensations coming from autonomic responses of the body including inputs such as visceral sensations, heart rate, sensations of tight muscles, etc. Those sensations are experienced due to the autonomic nervous system that is in charge of controlling and regulating bodily functions and cannot be manipulated intentionally. Previous research on interoception in performers has shown that a relationship exists between our inner bodily se…

Exploring relations among mindfulness facets and various meditation practices: Do they work in different ways?

2017

Several meditation practices are associated with mindfulness-based interventions but little is known about their specific effects on the development of different mindfulness facets. This study aimed to assess the relations among different practice variables, types of meditation, and mindfulness facets. The final sample was composed of 185 participants who completed an on-line survey, including information on the frequency and duration of each meditation practice, lifetime practice, and the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. A Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes structural model was specified, estimated, and tested. Results showed that the Model's overall fit was adequate: chi(2) (1045) =…
